I Spy with my Feminist Eye: Critical Media Analysis
Jennifer Watt, Shannon D.M. Moore, Selena Alevizos, Alex Derlago, and Mackenzy Groot.
In this special publication from the Addressing Sexual Violence in School Collective, we outline the theories that inform our research. Subsequently, we introduce the critical feminist tool that we used to initiate our analysis, outline our research process, and summarize our initial findings. Finally, we introduce three essays from the Bachelor of Education teacher candidates who were Undergraduate Research Award recipients and part of our collective about their experiences conducting media analysis with our research objectives in mind.
As the B.Ed. members of our collective selected specific pieces of media to use with the “I Spy” Tool, they were each able to offer their own commentary on the tool and on critical feminist media analysis more broadly. They also considered the suitability of these specific media texts for the K–12 classrooms. These views are presented in this series of essays

Brooke Jackson and Lauryn Handoga
In this section, we feature two research posters that were created by Bachelor of Education teacher candidates who were recipients of the 2024 University of Manitoba Undergraduate Research Award.
Brooke’s poster focuses on a critical discourse analysis of the Manitoba Gr. 9 and 10 Human Sexuality Curriculum Resources.
Lauryn’s poster focuses on the creation of pedagogical playing cards as a resource for teaching about GBSV through critical media analysis.
