Critical Media Literacy Framework

Critical Media Literacy Framework

Critical media literacy (Kellner & Share, 2019) relies on six key concepts: social constructivism; language & semiotics; audience/positionality; politics of representation; production/institutions; and social & environmental justice. This resource includes six cards that represent each concept, using a visual and a definition. The cards can be used to introduce the concepts and to focus media analysis. Specifically, students can be given a set of cards (1-6) and asked to analyze a media text through each concept. Or, groups could be assigned a specific concept. Or, the cards could be made into posters and displayed on classroom walls. This will remind students that every time they are engaging with a medium, whether that be a film, a poem, a music video, a painting, or a social media post, they should be using their critical media literacy skills.
